Dixon's free admission makes a slower Memphis art visit possible
The galleries and seventeen-acre garden can be explored through short return visits instead of one packed afternoon.

A museum visit can be worthwhile without exhausting the whole building. Return to one painting, notice a color you missed, then take the question outside. Dixon Gallery and Gardens offers Memphis residents an opportunity to build that kind of familiarity through repeated, modest visits.
General admission is free. The Dixon's current visitor information describes seventeen acres combining an art museum with a public garden, so an outing can move between a framed composition and the arrangement of plants, light and paths outdoors.
Regular hours are Tuesday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., and Sunday, 1–5 p.m., with closure on Mondays. Third Thursdays extend to 8 p.m. Confirm current holiday schedules and the specific exhibition or program you want to see; a general visit and a separately listed class may have different arrangements.
Choose a simple theme for a first visit: light on a surface, a repeated shape or how an artist directs attention. Outside, look for an equivalent relationship without expecting the garden to illustrate a painting literally. Free entry leaves room to stop before everyone gets tired and return with another question when the season or exhibition changes.
